Finding a campsite right for you

Campsites may be organised or somewhere you select on the spur of the moment.  But there are some considerations that need to be taken into account before you commit to a camping site. Here we’ll examine the basics of how to choose one.

You can’t pre-order a suitable campsite. One that will suit some campers and tents may not suit everybody.  However, there are some basics that you should be aware of before you set up your tents for the night.

A camping site means only 2 things. On an organised campsite you may have facilities like a shop, toilets, showers and even laundry facilities. If you don’t like noise at night, best to avoid these large sites with lots of facilities and therefore people.  Some very large sites may have a bar or entertainment block, which could be noisy at night. If you like socialising this may suit you well, but if not a quieter campsite may be just what you need.

The second type of campsite that you will come across is a site that you choose to pitch your camping tents, which is not an organised campsite. This could be a field or open plot of land.If a field, you need to ask the farmer.Don’t assume you can camp there – many farmers dislike campers and may become angry if you make assumptions about their land.

If you are in a remote place, it may be nice and quiet, but you may lack access to water for boiling to drink and wash.Consider water – bottled will do fine. You also need to consider toilet facilities.A nearby pub is useful but don’t forget toilet facilities!

Don’t pitch tent in a valley due to the flooding risk. You also should avoid sites adjacent to water (eg rivers lakes and canals) as there will be insects and maybe even rats.

But so long as you consider the issues above and choose what is right for you and for your needs, then you should have a great experience camping and have a comfortable stay.
